Russian-Terrorist Forces Conduct Massive Attacks in Donbas
In recent days the occupying Russian forces carried out massive attacks across the contact line in Donbas using all available weapons, including Multiple Launch Rocket Systems "Grad", 152 mm and 122 mm artillery, 120 and 82 mm mortars, and tanks, all which are prohibited by the Minsk agreements, as well as small arms. Since the early hours of Sunday, 29 January, the hybrid Russian forces have conducted massive artillery attacks on Avdiivka and its suburbs directly from the Donetsk and Yasynuvata residential areas and sent assault units to seize control of the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near Avdiivka.
On 29 January the Ukrainian positions were shelled nearly four hundred times, while on 30 January this number doubled. The information on the high intensity of explosions was reflected in the SMM report of 30 January.
On the night of January 30th and 31th, MLRS "Grad" systems, positioned in residential areas of the Donetsk city, were used to shell Avdiivka. Over 80 Grad missiles were fired.
Over the two days of 29th and 30th January, 8 Ukrainian servicemen were killed and 26 were wounded. There are casualties and wounded persons among civilians.
In the evening of 30 January the Russian hybrid forces damaged the last functioning electric power line cutting off the Avdiivka coke plant and leaving the town of Avdiivka without heat, electric power and water supply. The Donetsk filter station stopped functioning. Taking into account current weather conditions in Donbas, where the temperature fell at night to minus 20 degrees Celsius, the Ukrainian authorities have announced an emergency situation in Avdiivka and are making every effort to help local residents.
The Kremlin’s actions may qualify as a war crime, a gross violation of the Geneva Convention of 12 August 1949. It amounts to an unlawful, wanton and extensive destruction of property not justified by military necessity. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine underscored that the current escalation in Donbas is a clear indication of Russia's continued blatant disregard of its commitments under the Minsk agreements, with a view of preventing the stabilization of the situation and undermining the achievement of any progress in the security and humanitarian spheres. Ukraine demands that the Russian Federation immediately cease hostilities and comply strictly with the ceasefire. Ukraine also requests our international partners to step up political and diplomatic pressure on the Kremlin to stop the dangerous escalation in Donbas and avoid a humanitarian catastrophe in the region.

EUROPE NYT Ukraine War Heats Up as U.S. Seeks Thaw With Russia By ANDREW E. KRAMER JAN. 31, 2017 MOSCOW — The war in eastern Ukraine that simmered quietly for months has erupted in a lethal bout of fighting in recent days. The violence, which killed at least eight Ukrainian soldiers and three on the pro-Russian side, shifted the front lines by only a few hundred yards in several spots, but potentially complicates American efforts to improve relations with Russia. The United States Army helps to train and equip Ukrainian soldiers, who are fighting Russian-backed separatists in two eastern provinces of Ukraine, in the only active war in Europe today. In the latest outbreak, the sides vied for control of what are known as “gray zone” territories, areas between the front lines that had previously been in buffer zones. The Ukrainian Army advanced in at least two places, according to news reports and official Ukrainian accounts, but it said it did so to rebuff rebel attacks. Each side blamed the other for the escalation. Referring to one front-line town, an adviser to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, Yuri Kasyanov, told Radio Free Europe on Tuesday, “The defenders of Avdiivka preferred to advance the line” to a more defensible position. Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Ministry issued a statement appealing to Western governments to intervene diplomatically. “For the last two days, the Russian occupation forces carried out massive attacks across the line,” firing with rocket artillery, heavy mortars and other long-range weapons, the statement said. European monitors reported heavy shelling of Avdiivka since Sunday. Morning Briefing: Europe What you need to know to start your day, delivered to your inbox. Journalists who visited the town reported evidence of a psychological warfare operation of a sophistication that suggested Russian involvement. Cellphones in the town received text messages addressed to Ukrainian soldiers, who often carry phones, saying, “You are just meat to your commanders.” The shelling disrupted electrical and water supplies. The Ukrainian authorities set up heated shelters for residents whose homes had been damaged, as nighttime temperatures dropped to minus 18 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 28 Celsius). “Given harsh weather conditions and the continuing shelling by the militants, the humanitarian situation in the area continues to deteriorate,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s statement said. The authorities said they were preparing to evacuate the town’s 16,000 residents. The rebel governments of the Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics, which are not recognized internationally, issued a joint statement addressed to President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and President Trump that also called for a diplomatic solution. The Trump administration’s maneuvering for better relations with Russia has alarmed Ukrainian officials, who fear that Western pressure could ease on Russia to withdraw its unacknowledged military forces in eastern Ukraine. But Ukraine is not without options in defending itself, including using its army, which showed an ability to fight even before American training began. Since the so-called line of contact was initially negotiated in a cease-fire in September 2014, the Ukrainian Army has in places given ground after separatist attacks. With its recent advance, the army moved back into at least one such area, near Avdiivka, without crossing the original cease-fire line, Mr. Kasyanov, the adviser to the Interior Ministry, said. See Ukraine in Athens. Restarting

The second part of “See Ukraine: Docudays UA On Tour” took place on 20 - 11 November in Athens. The festival was suspended in May because of the protest meeting organized by pro-Russian forces calling themselves “Greek atifascists”. On the eve of the opening on May 13th the managers of the Exile Room, the main festival venue in Greece, refused to host the festival events after radical groups’ call for a protest rally near the location. The festival was urgently relocated to the Embassy of Ukraine in Greece.

The participants of the discussion: Inga Korotkevych (translator), Nick Fragkakis (journalist), Halyna Masliuk (moderator), Oleksandra Matviychuk (human rights activist), Maryna Shkurova (translator)

The fetival team supported by Association of the Ukrainian Diaspora in Greece “Ukrainian - Hellenic Thought” has been loking for safe location for several months. The festival was finally organized at the culture center of Webster University in Athens. The program included films “Ukrainian sheriffs” by Roman Bondarchuk and “The Living Fire” by Ostap Kostiuk. After the screenings viewers were able to discuss films with heroes and authors. Discussion “Is democracy in war time possible?” by Ukrainian human rights activist Oleksandra Matviychuk and Greek journalist Nick Fragkakis also took place.

Project coordinators in Athens (Anna Maniati, Lesya Nedelcheva, Halyna Masliuk) and human rights activist Oleksandra Matviychuk

“For me the most interesting part of See Ukraine project journeys are discussions after films and speeches of experts on public discussions. For example, in Athens after “Ukrainian sheriffs” by Roman Bondarchuk people mostly discussed how documentary films that show problematic sides of life in the country actualize the work on these problems. Strong reaction was caused by the discussion ““Is democracy in war time possible?” The audience were arguing, whether it is more important for Ukraine to build the nation or civic society that will respect human rights regardless of language, skin color, religion, sexual orientation or gender. I believe it is for such discussions that we should oganize projects like this” - shares her impressions Yulia Serdyukova, “See Ukraine: Docudays UA On Tour” project coordinator.   Photo: Yulia Serdyukova http://docudays.org.ua/eng/2016/news/kino/seeukraine-athens/

Проект See Ukraine в Афінах.
