On the celebration in Athens the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language

Nestor litopysecEvery year, on November 9 in Ukraine celebrates the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language.

This holiday was established by the Decree of the President of Ukraine of November 6, 1997, and, following the Orthodox calendar, is the day of commemorating the Saint Nestor the Chronicler – follower of the creators of Slavic language – Saints Cyril and Methodius.

Its known that Nestor the Chronicler was born in Kyiv in 1050 year, and died about 1114 year. He was the chronicler of Kyiv, writer – hagiographist. Nestor the Chronicler – the author of ‘Lives of Saints Boris and Gleb’, and ‘Life of the Venerable Theodosius of the Kyiv Caves’. He wrote about the history of the Eastern Slavic and princely power, establishment of the Christianization of Kievan Rus. He is the author of “The Primary Chronicle” – the first book, which shows the history of the state along the background of the world events.

From the St. Nestor the Chronicler began development of the written Ukrainian language.

This year, on November 7, at the initiative of the Embassy of Ukraine to the Hellenic Republic and with the support of the Greek part of Greek-Ukrainian Parliamentary Friendship Group, in the Eleftherios Venizelos Hall of the Hellenic Parliament will be held a solemn event, dedicated to the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language. The foreign diplomats, members of the Greek Parliament and MEPs from Greece, politicians, historians and scientists, representatives of the Ukrainian community in Greece have been invited to participate at the event.
